The Ottawa City Commission on Nov. 6 read and adopted a proclamation recognizing the week of November 2024 as Animal Shelter Appreciation Week and thanking local animal-shelter volunteers and staff.
Commissioner Clayton read the proclamation highlighting the role of shelters in returning lost pets, partnering with nonprofits and promoting responsible pet ownership. Vanessa Cowie, identified in the record as executive director of Prairie Paws, accepted the proclamation and thanked the commission, staff and volunteers for their work.
The proclamation noted local and national pet-population figures as part of its statement of support and was signed by Mayor Michael Skidmore. The commission used the recognitions portion of its agenda to highlight the city's community partnerships with Prairie Paws and to publicize an upcoming Prairie Paws fundraiser at the Memorial Auditorium.
