Gardner City planning staff review year-end permit activity and introduce new deputy director

Planning staff used the Dec. 17 meeting to give a year-end update on housing activity and staffing. Staff said the city saw higher-than-average single-family building permits over the previous year, noting the city "reached, I believe it was 184 of those last year" and that November permit counts were 131; staff estimated the city might finish the year around 140 single-family permits. The presentation attributed some slowdown earlier in the year to higher interest rates and said staff hopes a recent decline in rates will lead to more project starts.
Staff announced the planning commission will meet Jan. 27, 2025 and that at least one major agenda item is expected, tied to recent annexation activity in the area around 170 and Claire. The meeting also included a staff introduction: Maggie Brewster was reintroduced as the department's Deputy Director; staff said she joined about two months earlier and will work on process improvements and packet presentation for the planning commission.
The meeting closed after routine business and a unanimous vote to adjourn.
