City staff presented an ordinance to call an election asking voters to renew a citywide special purpose retailer sales tax of one-half of one percent (0.5%) dedicated to infrastructure. The council adopted Ordinance No. 2,814 to schedule the election for Feb. 11, 2025.
Staff told the council the ordinance calls for the tax to be used for constructing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, pedestrian bridges and trails. If voters approve the measure, staff said the tax would take effect Jan. 1, 2026 (or as soon thereafter as permitted by law) and would sunset 10 years after the effective date.
In response to council questions about current rates and overlapping district taxes, staff said the city's general sales tax base is 1% and the infrastructure sales tax is a half-cent on top of that; some areas of the city also have community improvement districts that add additional tax percentages.
The ordinance was moved and seconded, the clerk called the roll and members voted in favor; the ordinance passed.
