Scurry County Commissioners Court adopted the county—s fiscal year 2025 budget and set the property tax rate at 0.5498 per $100 of assessed valuation following a public hearing held at 10:06 a.m.
County staff told the court that insurance increases came in lower than estimated (2.5% actual versus a 5% assumption) and that staff adjustments reduced salary lines; Speaker 5 said the net reduction in the proposed budget was $413,004.63. Speaker 2 said the 0.5498 rate under consideration would generate about $19,383,532 in revenue under current valuations.
Speaker 3 moved to adopt the 2025 budget and to approve the order adopting the tax rate; Speaker 2 seconded and the court approved the motion. The court also made separate motions to adopt the interest & sinking (I&S) component of the tax rate at 0.0278 and the maintenance & operations (M&O) component at 0.522. Speaker 3 said the M&O change equated to roughly $42 per $100,000 of taxable value.
Officials said they would post a breakdown on the county website showing what services each portion of the tax rate funds (examples given included EMS at $55.63 and the senior center at $18.54 per $100,000 of value). The court closed the public hearing at 10:09 a.m. and finalized the budget and tax orders.
The record vote was taken as part of the adoption process; a roll-call tally was not transcribed into the meeting record provided here.
