Scurry County reports 66 earthquake damage claims; court schedules meeting to consider extending disaster declaration

"As of this morning, there were 66 different reports on there, from damage throughout Scurry County, different businesses and homes, from minor to 3 major," an unidentified court speaker said during the meeting. The court instructed residents to report damage through the county website and said staff will meet Friday at 10 a.m. to consider whether to extend the county's disaster declaration.
Officials noted the county’s local threshold for disaster damages at $73,000, while the state threshold for a larger disaster designation was cited as $53,000,000. The court did not indicate that the state threshold had been met; staff said they will continue compiling damage reports and would return to the court Friday with an update.
Commissioners also reported that bridge inspections in Precinct 1 had been completed and that TxDOT plans to recheck some structures; they specifically flagged the Avenue E bridge for separate attention. No formal action was taken during the update beyond scheduling the Friday meeting.
The court’s next procedural step is the scheduled meeting on Friday where staff will present updated damage totals and a recommendation on whether to extend the county’s disaster declaration.
