Commission staff report 'Vision Zero' Safety Action Plan progress; 'nearly 700' public comments informed draft

Colleen Medeiros provided an update on the Cape Cod Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, describing outreach in November that included three public meetings (Orleans, Sandwich and Barnstable), focus groups with seasonal workers and first responders, and a public-comment tool that collected what staff described as nearly 700 comments.
Medeiros said the team is finalizing a highway injury network and will move to identifying location-specific countermeasures and town- or region-wide initiatives. She described options for a regional leadership commitment (examples discussed ranged toward a 2050 target year for zero fatalities and serious injuries) and said a draft goal will be returned for possible MPO discussion and a future vote.
Members asked for practical tools to tie Vision Zero goals to project-level reviews (for example, a checklist or short form that project managers could use to assess safety impacts). Medeiros noted inclusion in the regional action plan would make towns eligible to apply for federal Safe Streets and Roads for All implementation grants in 2025, but she cautioned the program is competitive.
