Commissioners endorse Woodson Elementary restoration with no county funding commitment

Taylor County Commissioners Court voted 5-0 on Sept. 24, 2024 to approve a resolution supporting a community-led effort to restore Woodson Elementary School. County staff emphasized the action is a resolution of support and does not obligate the county to provide funding.

Commissioner Stott introduced the item and described the building's historical importance. Anthony Williams, identified in the meeting as the former mayor of Abilene, told the court the restoration is planned as a multimillion-dollar effort supported by consultants and grant writers working with the city and the school district. "It will be a multimillion dollar initiative and they have engaged with consultants and grant writers working with the city, as well as the school district," Williams said.

The court clarified that Taylor County would provide a resolution of support only and that organizers did not expect county financial contribution. Commissioner Burcham moved to approve the resolution and Commissioner Kendrick seconded; the motion passed by voice vote 5-0.

Staff said the resolution would be delivered to project organizers as an expression of the court's support; any future county involvement or funding would require separate action by the court.
