Taylor County extends COVID leave for FY2025 after review of multi-year costs

The Taylor County Commissioners Court voted unanimously on Sept. 24, 2024 to extend COVID leave into fiscal year 2025 after staff briefed the court on cumulative payouts and usage.
Mister Anderson presented the county's COVID-leave costs since the start of the pandemic, reporting a total payout of approximately $664,000 across multiple fiscal years. He broke the spending into rough fiscal-year buckets: roughly $381,000 at the start of the pandemic, about $279,000 in FY2022, $93,000 in FY2023 and about $109,000 so far in FY2024. "The total payout on that pay code from the start of the pandemic to date is dollars 664,000," Mister Anderson said.
The judge and commissioners discussed hospitalizations and public-health guidance; staff said the health department reported continued cases and that the extension would reduce the chance employees come to work sick and potentially spread infection. Commissioners requested historical usage by year before deciding; after staff provided the figures the court voted to extend COVID leave for FY2025 on a motion from Commissioner Kendrick, seconded by Commissioner Williams.
Staff noted that the county continues to provide paid sick leave when a communicable disease is work-related, per recent legislative changes, and that COVID will be covered under that policy when applicable. The action extends the county's existing COVID leave policy into the next fiscal year; staff will return with any necessary administrative steps to implement the extension.
