Taylor County Commissioners Court on the record Tuesday paused action to set countywide employee salaries for fiscal year 2025, saying department leaders needed more time to review how a recent salary list was calculated.
Mister Anderson, who presented the proposal and cited Local Government Code §122.011 as the court’s authority to set pay rates, said the recommendation was based on a modified salary-start survey and that the current budget funds roughly half of the survey’s recommended minimums. Commissioners pressed for clarity on methodology after several department heads reported they had seen a new list that differed from earlier budget expectations.
Commissioner Williams moved to table the item until the next commissioners’ court meeting so department heads could meet with staff and the auditor to resolve questions; Commissioner Kendrick seconded. The motion passed 5-0.
Sheriff (Bishop) and other department representatives said staff had already been told employees would receive increases based on prior budget approval, and asked the court to confirm that the county would deliver the increases budgeted in the adopted spending plan. Court members said they wanted department heads to confirm figures and explain differences before a final vote.
The court discussed a possible special-called meeting but agreed to schedule the follow-up after staff compiles department questions and the auditor confirms available funds. The court’s actions were strictly procedural: tabling for further review, not a change to pay policy. The item may return on a special call or the next regular session pending department input and staff follow-up.
