Carter County cancels two uncashed juror checks totaling $24

Deputy Clerk and Recorder Dana Asherman asked the Carter County Commission on Feb. 18 to cancel two outstanding juror-payment warrants issued in January 2024 after both recipients failed to cash the $12 checks and did not respond to mailed notices.
Asherman told the board she had mailed a form letter offering recipients the chance to request replacement checks or allow the county to cancel the warrants; there was no response. She asked the commission for permission to cancel the two $12 warrants so that the funds could be returned to the county general fund. “...we sent these…giving them an opportunity to either request a new check, cash their check, or allow us to just cancel it,” Asherman said.
A commissioner moved to approve cancelling the two uncashed warrants; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Asherman said staff will complete the paperwork, provide signed copies for the county file and follow up with county clerks to confirm whether those recipients were county employees or had other employer-related pay rules that might explain nonpayment.
The commission recorded the motion as carried; the $24 from the two uncashed jury checks will be deposited into the county general fund.
