Parks and events staff (Mr. McFarland) proposed a weeklong entry period for the dog‑park naming contest, a staff review to reduce entries to about 10 names, a community poll, advisory commission input, and a final council decision. "We'd be collecting forms for about a week... we'd work to narrow it down to about 10 names," Mr. McFarland said. Council members expressed enthusiasm and approved the contest on a motion by Member Lugar with a second by Member Anstead.
On the Mayor‑for‑a‑Day program, Mr. McFarland outlined a local contest modeled on the League of Minnesota Cities program: essays (400 words or less) from fourth through sixth graders, local recognition, publication of winning essays, and a small local prize. Council discussed outreach to schools and the possibility of making local accommodations for young people with special needs while noting such entrants would not be eligible for the LMC statewide competition if local parameters differed. The council approved the local contest by voice vote and asked staff to finalize timelines and judging procedures.
Staff will post entry forms on the city website and social media and promote the contests at upcoming events such as Stagecoach Days.
