The council approved a Scout Project application from Girl Scout Troop 57731 to construct a Little Free Library at Ashton Park.
City staff member Mister McFarland introduced the application and said staff had reviewed it and recommended approval. Five members of Troop 57731 stepped forward to present the project and explain the maintenance and book‑stocking plan. "We have a couple series, yes, a brand new set of Harry Potter books that are gonna go in there," one troop member said, adding the girls planned to include age‑appropriate series and other donations.
Council members asked whether the city could assist with site preparation. Member Yeager said volunteers would face dense regrowth of Siberian elm and heavy weeds near the boxes and asked if crews could clear that vegetation before the scouts’ planned work. Mister McFarland responded that staff would inspect the site and work to address the invasive growth and the weedy sand under the play equipment before the troop’s project begins.
Friends of the Library also offered support; Member Yeager said local volunteers had books the troop could use to start the Little Free Library. Mayor Everson thanked the troop for their civic engagement.
Member Anstead moved to approve the Scout Project application; Member Schilling seconded and the council approved the measure on a voice vote.
Next steps include finalizing the library’s exact location in Ashton Park with Public Works and scheduling the troop’s work days once crews have completed initial site prep.
