Mario Garcia, Dimmit County's county clerk, submitted an official retirement letter and his last day will be Dec. 31, 2024, the commissioners court said. The court directed staff to open the county clerk position for members of the public to submit resumes and noted the appointment process will follow Local Government Code §87.041, the same approach the court used previously to fill a sheriff vacancy.
Judge and commissioners discussed scheduling a special meeting to accept statements of interest and to interview candidates, but they emphasized that while interviews may occur before Jan. 1, the court cannot appoint a replacement until after the clerk's resignation takes effect to avoid possible legal challenges. The court identified that, in the interim, the chief deputy clerk will lead the office to ensure continuity of services.
The court instructed the judge's office and county attorney to prepare agenda language consistent with the statute and to notify interested parties of the special meeting date. No appointment was made; commissioners agreed to return the matter to an upcoming agenda with a special meeting to conduct candidate interviews.
