Area Health Education Center presents Starr County health directory, highlights need for vaccine education

Dr. Julie Vassan, representing the Area Health Education Center, presented a bilingual Starr County Health and Services Directory and summarized findings from a countywide survey at the Starr County Commissioners Court on Aug. 12. The directory includes a QR code for public access and, according to presenters, will be maintained as a "living document" with regular updates.
Dr. Vassan said the directory is intended to give residents clear information on where to find health services, food resources and help paying bills. She summarized survey responses about emergency preparedness and vaccination outreach, saying 31% of respondents prioritized continuing prevention-promotion methods, 18% requested more vaccine education, and another 18% emphasized individual responsibility for self-care. On improving vaccination rates, 31% recommended educational campaigns, 17% recommended community health services (local availability of vaccines), and 14% recommended broader awareness and public-information campaigns in both English and Spanish.
"This directory gives people the information as to where to find health services," Dr. Vassan said, noting the product includes a QR code that links to an online version. AHIC staff also reported that four local community members completed community health worker training in April and were state-certified in July. "We were able to graduate four of your community members for their community health workers," one AHIC staff member said, adding that certification and small grants helped trainees cover expenses while they trained.
AHIC told the court the grant that supported some of the work ended in April, but staff remain active in the county and said the Starr County Health Coalition meets monthly. Presenters offered more detailed data on request and invited county staff to work with AHIC on prevention campaigns, social-media outreach and other community information efforts.
Why this matters: The directory and survey identify local communication and access gaps around prevention and vaccines, and the newly certified community health workers could expand local outreach capacity. The AHIC presenters asked for county support and said their services are provided at no cost to residents.
AHIC said it will leave printed copies with county staff and Miss Fuentes and will continue to update the directory and to meet monthly with the local health coalition.
