Uvalde County accepts second draft of 2024–25 budget; public urges more budget workshops

County staff presented the second draft of the Uvalde County fiscal 2024–25 budget and asked the commissioners’ court to accept the draft so the final version can be presented at the August meeting. The presenter said the draft adds special‑revenue funds governed by elected officials, and that three large grants were still pending and would be added if awarded.
The presenter stated the draft’s overall total as roughly $48.5 million and said pending grant figures would be incorporated through revenue certifications or later amendments. The court scheduled the final presentation for the August 12 meeting.
Public commenter Dan Hook urged the court to restore community budget workshops that would allow department heads to explain line items and answer public questions. Hook also raised concerns about a resiliency center funded this year through a VOCA grant and asked what would happen to that program if the grant funding ended. "I'm hopeful that the county doesn't plan to take on those programs and fund them through tax dollars," Hook said.
Commissioners voted to accept the second draft. Acceptance at this stage is procedural: it places the draft on the public record and sets the timeline toward a final budget adoption later in the fall.
