Uvalde County approves DOJ grant and service agreements for Uvalde Together Resiliency Center

Uvalde County Commissioners on Monday voted to accept a federal Department of Justice grant and to authorize agreements with local providers to operate services at the Uvalde Together Resiliency Center. The court approved the resolution and related memoranda of understanding by voice vote.
An unidentified county presenter told the court the county pursued federal funding after a prior two‑year $5 million VOCA award expired. The presenter said the Department of Justice awarded “approximately $4,000,979” under an Anti‑Terrorism and Emergency Act program and asked commissioners to accept the award on behalf of Uvalde County.
The presenter described how the award would be allocated: $1,745,696 to Hill Country MHDD for counselors and therapy services; about $410,850 to Bluebonnet; and $393,750 to Nueva Vida (identified in the presentation as a local counseling service). “There is no matching grant; we are not required to put any money in the county,” the presenter said.
During public comment, Diana Alvedo Carue noted that the earlier VOCA funding had expired and asked whether the county would be required to provide matching funds to continue the program after federal dollars are spent. The presenter replied that the DOJ award does not require a county match.
After discussion the court moved to approve the resolution and then approved memoranda of understanding to allow the named providers to operate services at the Resiliency Center. The court directed staff to execute the MOUs and proceed with implementation.
Next steps identified by the presenter included executing MOUs and moving forward with the provider allocations; the court approved those steps on voice votes.
