UVALDE COUNTY — Uvalde County commissioners on the dais accepted the county’s annual employee major medical renewal after a presentation by the county’s broker team and Higginbotham.
Corner English of Higginbotham and the county’s agent of record outlined program performance and recommended retaining the current stop‑loss carrier. English emphasized Higginbotham’s value‑added services — including a toll‑free support line and an online enrollment portal provided at no extra charge — and said the county’s multi‑year trend is relatively stable despite a large single‑year increase.
The presenters said the county has paid about $492,000 in stop‑loss premium to date while stop‑loss claims that exceeded the individual attachment point have amounted to roughly $587,000. They reported the county’s total program cost at about $3.5 million for the plan year (described in the presentation as a 25% increase from the previous year), and noted a six‑year average annual increase of approximately 1.4 percent. The stop‑loss individual attachment point was stated as $45,000.
‘‘We’re recommending to stay with the current stop‑loss carrier,’’ the presenter said, adding that many of this year’s large claims appear to be one‑time events and may not recur.
Commissioner Vargas moved to accept the plan and renewal; Commissioner Bates seconded. With no recorded roll‑call, the court voiced approval and the motion carried.
The court did not increase employee premium contributions as part of the renewal, and staff said the recommendation required no other program changes. The presenters noted that carrier market changes and historical variability informed their estimate for next year’s expected costs.
The county will proceed under the renewal terms and continue using Higginbotham‑provided services; the court did not adopt additional conditions or amendments at the meeting.
