Votes at a glance: Wilson County commissioners approve budget, leases, bids and proclamations

Key outcomes approved by the court:
- Adopted the fiscal 2024-25 budget (motion passed). The adopted budget included addenda for La Vernia Library rent ($9,000) and emergency-management public-notification software ($5,390). (See earlier article for budget and tax-rate detail.)
- Ratified the county property tax increase and set the 2024 tax rate at 0.414748 (M&O 0.404355; I&S 0.010393). The court adopted both motions by voice vote.
- Extended three lease agreements to allow Camino Real Community Services continued use of county-provided public space and approved the related motion to extend the lease agreement.
- Approved bid awards for county materials and fuel: the court accepted all bidders for flexible base/asphalt materials (multiple vendors) and after discussion restricted the bulk gasoline and diesel award to Great Lakes Petroleum and Midtex Oil (the Laredo vendor was excluded because of higher pricing and limited precinct usage). Commissioners discussed delivery logistics, county tank placement and vendor-provided tanks.
- Agreed to enter into an agreement with the Alamo Area Council of Governments to proceed with a resolution of intent to establish a Wilson County PACE program and set a public hearing for Sept. 23.
- Accepted the sheriff and constable fees for 2025 to remain at 2024 levels; approved the minutes of the commissioners court; and approved payment of county bills totaling $350,144.14 after one invoice was revised.
- Accepted a proclamation presented by Camino Real declaring September Suicide Awareness Month; the court approved the proclamation on a voice vote.
Other items:
- A public request to paint a mural on a former railroad bridge in Sesbanco was discussed; commissioners noted the bridge appears to be owned by Union Pacific Railroad (not county property) and directed staff to try to obtain a railroad contact and suggested consulting the historical society. No county authorization to paint the bridge was granted because the county does not own the structure.
- Human Resources reported new hires (two corrections officers and one tax office specialist) and effective dates; payroll and personnel changes were recorded.
