Sheriff reports steady call volumes, new mental-health pilot and resolved jail inspection items

Sheriff Jim Stewart presented the Wilson County Sheriff's Office monthly report during the Oct. 28 Commissioners Court meeting, saying September included 504 reportable calls and 1,028 non-reportable calls for a monthly total of 1,532 calls.
Stewart described a new mental-health response pilot that pairs county law enforcement with STRAC and Camino Real, using the Medcom/EMS system to locate and manage patients and — in some cases — handle incidents remotely without transport. On the pilot he said, "We're a pilot program for them," and told the court the approach has already been used by officers and appears to shorten the time spent on mental-health calls.
On jail operations, Stewart reported a recent inspection found a few administrative noncompliance items; he said those issues have been addressed and the jail administrator and staff are implementing a plan to avoid recurrence. He added the inspector commended jail staff for a positive atmosphere and praised the maintenance program for the older jail facility.
Stewart also reported the department replaced its camera system at the jail with new equipment installed by Guardian and said the same system may be used in district court and other facilities. He noted a staffing shortfall — saying the office is "overstaffed by 1" in one phrasing and elsewhere that filling some pending applications would reduce a deficit of three to four positions.
The sheriff sought direction about reporting frequency; he asked whether the court wanted the monthly report in its current format. Commissioners indicated they were satisfied with the format for now.
