Commissioners approve MOU for 700 MHz radio system; staff cites Motorola equipment and two planned towers

Harrison County Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with TxDOT, DPS and the Statewide Interoperability Coordinator (SWIC) related to a new 700 megahertz county radio system, a step county staff said will help move the communications upgrade forward.
A county presenter described multiple implementation steps and praised the county’s choice of Motorola equipment. "We've since learned that there are 2 more standards coming down the pipe in the not too distant future that are already built into our newer Motorola equipment that other manufacturers are yet to have," the presenter said, adding that the decision to go with Motorola was fortuitous. The speaker said the county is coordinating construction of two towers — one near Highway 449 and another at Smyrna — but that TxDOT scheduling could delay tower work into the summer.
Commissioners moved and seconded the MOU approval and recorded the motion as passing 4–0. Staff said the MOU is one of several documents needed to progress to subsequent phases, including tower construction and system cutover.
What’s next: county staff will continue coordination with TxDOT and vendors on tower schedules, equipment readiness and future switchover planning.
