Town begins FEMA hazard-mitigation plan update, aims for higher federal reimbursement

Marty Wasserman, the town's emergency management director, told the Select Board the town has contracted with the Rutland Regional Planning Commission to update its FEMA hazard-mitigation plan, last approved in 2019. Wasserman said the update is intended to improve the town's federal-reimbursement level for disaster costs (the town currently sits at the 12.5% tier and is aiming toward the 17.5% tier).
Wasserman outlined a timeline: outreach and data gathering through September and October, mitigation-strategy development in November and December, and submitting a draft to Vermont Emergency Management in mid-December through February with final adjustments and filing for FEMA approval planned in February 2025. He encouraged public input and said the town will post materials and engage residents to help complete the risk assessment.
The Select Board asked for periodic updates; Wasserman said he will post outreach materials in town and submit articles to local forums to raise participation.
