UFC praises volunteer pruning program, records resignation and upcoming planting plans

At the close of the Dec. 18 meeting, commissioners highlighted volunteer activity and staffing changes. Rich reported a November training for volunteers in young‑tree pruning and said about 10 active volunteers are engaged in winter pruning and mentoring work. He told the commission he would forward volunteer hours records needed for the Tree City USA application.
The chair announced the resignation of Jordan Freed and described the vacancy process: the chair has contacted the city clerk and will reach out to the mayor’s office to confirm the next steps and to solicit candidate suggestions from commissioners. Commissioners thanked volunteers and partners including Tree Northampton and DPW for supporting planting, watering and logistics.
The commission noted it recorded 33 trees planted by one commissioner this year and a running inventory showing 2,212 trees tracked since 02/2015; they plan to continue planting and to finalize spring orders and sites in advance of the 2025 season.
