Lavaca County adopts social media policy to govern departmental accounts and website syncing

Lavaca County commissioners voted Sept. 10 to adopt a social media policy to govern county departmental accounts and their use. The policy will be inserted into the county personnel manual as a new section addressing social media use and email authorization.
The policy requires that department heads or authorized personnel designate who may operate official social media platforms and recommends dual administrators for pages such as the county EMS account. Commissioners emphasized the need to distinguish personal social media use from official county posts, to maintain respectful communications and to provide accountability for posts by elected officials, department heads and employees.
Commissioner discussion noted the policy will be periodically updated to reflect changes in law or organizational practice and that the county’s website redesign will eventually include a feature to sync departmental social posts to a site newsreel. The presiding commissioner said the policy is intended to be practical and fluid rather than fixed on a shelf. A motion to adopt the policy was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The court’s adoption allows staff to incorporate the social media rules into the personnel manual and to proceed with implementation planning tied to the website update.
