The Gonzales City Council voted Oct. 17 to rename the city’s summer youth program in honor of Moochie Turk, who members said was a longtime community leader associated with the program’s origin.
Mayor and council members said naming the program for Turk would recognize her decades of service; several members recommended retaining the descriptive phrase "summer youth program" alongside her name so that younger residents would understand the program’s purpose. Councilmember Miller moved to honor Moochie Turk by adding her name to the program and Councilmember Kreidler seconded. The motion carried with unanimous support.
Staff and members agreed the change will be reflected in materials and program listings so that the new name both honors Turk and remains clear to participants and families.
