Atascosa County approves $13,000 grant to Meals on Wheels to leverage state funding

Atascosa County Commissioners Court on Sept. 9 approved a resolution certifying a $13,000 county grant to Meals on Wheels of San Antonio to be used in Atascosa County during fiscal year 2025.
Vincent Farris of Meals on Wheels told the court the county contribution helps the organization apply for grant funds from the Texas Department of Agriculture and “leverages state general revenue dollars to come back here to help serve those in need.” He said the county support also reduces emergency and long-term public costs by keeping homebound elderly and disabled residents fed and out of hospitals and nursing homes.
The resolution as read by the judge states the county certifies it has made a grant in the amount of $13,000 to be paid and used between Oct. 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2025, and certifies that Meals on Wheels of San Antonio provides home-delivery meals to eligible homebound persons in the county and has an approved accounting system required by the program rules. The resolution also cites the Texas program requirement that a county grant and fiscal-agent approval are prerequisites for eligibility for the Texas Department of Agriculture program.
Commissioner Mark Gillespie moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Riley seconded. The court voted to approve the resolution and the motion carried. After the vote, staff and the Meals on Wheels representative posed for photographs and exchanged brief thanks.
The approved county grant will be listed in county fiscal records and is intended to be used to support local meal delivery while enabling the nonprofit to seek additional state grant funds.
