Sheriff David Sauer presented the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office annual report on Dec. 30, saying major crimes were down from 2023 and that 2024 included substantial training and civil-process activity. The court then approved a proclamation honoring Sauer's 48 years of service and proclaimed Dec. 30, 2024, "Sheriff David Sauer Day."
In his presentation, the sheriff summarized key figures from the report: civil process collections of $70,800 for Atascosa County, an average daily jail population of 182 (152 males and 30 females) and a combined 6,992 training hours for deputies and dispatch (2,895 in-office hours and 4,097 out-of-facility hours). He said some misdemeanor categories increased but overall described 2024 as "a pretty decent year" for the office.
The court approved acceptance of the annual report after the sheriff's presentation. Later in the meeting, the court read a proclamation recognizing Sauer's continuous service beginning Jan. 1, 1977 and his election as sheriff in 2013; the proclamation thanked him for leadership and service. Sauer, speaking after the proclamation, thanked the court and county employees. "Most of all thanking the citizens of Atascosa County and for their support," he said.
Proclamation and recognition: the court moved to approve the proclamation honoring Sheriff Sauer; the motion was made and seconded and carried by voice vote. The court scheduled a cake and a celebration honoring his tenure and invited the community to attend.
What happens next: the county will process the accepted report for its records and host the planned recognition events for the sheriff; the sheriff-elect's incoming transition was referenced in personnel items earlier in the meeting.
