Board reviews two-year draft calendar and hears school start-time committee update

Pam presented draft two-year district calendars created by a calendar-planning group that included administrators, teachers, parents and transportation/childcare representatives. The drafts meet Department of Public Instruction requirements (no start before Sept. 1 and minimum instructional hours by level), include prioritized elements (balanced instructional terms, teacher workdays, professional development days), and aim to align spring breaks with neighboring districts. The board discussed whether the two-year approach provides needed stability for families and the ability to make adjustments later if necessary; the item will return for action in January.
Separately, board member Mary reported that the school-start-time committee has held two well-attended, two-hour meetings with table-based discussions, benchmark review and advisory-group follow-ups. The committee is still in the study phase, using guided discussions and read-ahead materials; no decisions have been made.
Next steps: Calendar drafts will return in January for board action and the start-time committee will continue stakeholder engagement and report back through advisory representatives.
