District adopts ELA text selection and expands middle-school CTE and ENCORE electives

Kristen Comerford described updated middle-level CTE pathway courses and eighth-grade elective choices: new offerings include an eighth-grade business/marketing course (international business/entrepreneurship), an intro to computer science, family and consumer science electives (global culinary, enterprise, design/textiles), and technology/engineering/STEM courses ("You Can Build It" construction-focused work, graphic and media design, robotics and environmental/biotech engineering topics) to strengthen pathways into high school.
Renee Olman reviewed ENCORE exploratory electives for eighth graders including 2D/3D art, piano, guitar/ukulele, percussion and ensemble options designed to complement band/choir/orchestra and allow students multiple quarter/semester choices while preserving ensemble participation.
Board members asked about how increased choices would affect fine-arts and world-language participation and were assured counselors and registration procedures will inform families of implications; staff said participation trends will be monitored annually.
No formal vote was taken on electives at this meeting; some items will return on consent or action agendas for formal adoption.
