The Appleton Area School District board voted to approve revised attendance boundaries for Sandy Slope and Huntley elementary schools, including a conditional designation that allows the district to revisit which school will serve a Thrivent property area as future development proceeds.
Administration described the new boundaries: the Huntley northern boundary will change to Highway 41, and the Sandy Slope area will be bounded to the north by Broadway Drive, east by the district line, south by Highway 41 and west following a path from Mead and Edgewood to Richmond Street. Administrators said the green ‘TBD’ square (Thrivent property) is included in Sandy Slope now but will be reevaluated as residential and multifamily development proceeds because projected density (administration cited a projection of about 700 single-family homes and over 1,300 apartments) could exceed what either school could absorb.
Board members asked how the district will monitor development and ensure families know assigned boundaries; administration said the district will coordinate with the city and provide updates so prospective buyers/renters know school assignment before lots are sold. A motion to approve the proposed Sandy Slope boundaries was moved and seconded and passed in roll call with one abstention recorded.
The board also approved the November check register and the annual school safety plan earlier in the meeting by roll call.
