The East Islip Union Free School District Board of Education recognized several student achievements across athletics and journalism during the meeting.
Coaches and boosters congratulated wrestler Vasilias (Basilios) Demille for an outstanding season—39 wins, 32 pins, second in county and a New York State qualifier—and noted his 95 GPA and college decision process. Coaches also recognized the girls bowling team for back‑to‑back Suffolk County championships and a fifth‑place state finish, naming key performers who earned Section 11 honors.
The varsity boys’ bowling program received praise for county and state placements (sectional and state competitors were named) with individual season averages and state‑tournament series called out for several players. Coaches highlighted underclassmen development and leadership from senior captains.
Gymnastics coach O’Connor honored Sofia Pepe for multiple all‑league/county/state recognitions and for receiving the New York State Sportsmanship Award. Track coaches described the girls’ track team’s consecutive small‑school county championships, a new school long‑jump record (18' 1.75") by Chloe Gaertino, and multiple state qualifiers.
The board also acknowledged journalism students who attended Adelphi University’s Press Day; sophomore Brooke Macaulay and junior Amelia Sacali earned competitive Quill Awards recognition, and the district encouraged the community to read student work online.
Board members and coaches highlighted both athletic achievement and academic success, and asked the community to recognize the students’ contributions.
