DC Everest showcases expanded summer-learning programs and participation gains

District leaders summarized the summer‑learning season, highlighting new and expanded courses, large participation and measurable student gains.
Director Bridal Sypniewski said five‑week programs increased instructional minutes to about 410,403, a rise from 2023, and described six new courses including Read and Run (grades 3–4), Star Wars Universe (junior high) and Ready to Rise (K–1). She noted individual student gains in fluency (examples: words‑per‑minute increases from 30 to 48 and from 34 to 59 for two students who attended all 20 days).
Assistant Director Jamie Salzman described the Hmong Enrichment program run in collaboration with Wausau schools; she said the 10‑day program served more than 300 students and culminated in cultural performances and student speakers. Salzman quoted a student, Ian Muah, saying the program is important because "When I am here, I am not the minority. I see kids that look like me… I feel comfortable being myself and being Hmong." Board members asked about challenges; staff said staffing and low Friday attendance are the biggest operational constraints.
Staff thanked administrators, nutrition services and community partners; the board commended program creativity and encouraged continued flexibility in offerings.
No policy action was taken; staff said more detailed program reports will follow as evaluation completes.
