City staff brought back a draft ordinance amendment to Chapter 2-45 that would tighten where mobile food units may operate in Isanti.
The draft would bar mobile food units from locating within 500 feet of preapproved festivals, sporting or civic events unless the unit is specifically licensed to participate in that event. It also increases the minimum distance from a brick-and-mortar restaurant’s primary entrance from the former threshold to 200 feet; the provision measures distance from the restaurant’s primary street-facing entrance and treats multi-tenant facilities consistently. If a mobile food unit proposes a location within 200 feet of a restaurant, the application must include written permission from the restaurant owner.
Staff noted licenses run for one year and that locations lawfully operating under an existing license would remain permitted for the remainder of that license term even if rules change later. The council agreed the written-permission requirement closes a gap in prior language; staff said the draft ordinance will be posted for the required 10-day notice and returned on a future council agenda for possible approval.
