Fire chief: AFG grant pending; department buys used Can-Am, plans aircraft crash exercise

Fire Chief S3 told the council the department is awaiting word on a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) that would fund new air packs and said the department expects to know awards by the end of the month.
“We're still waiting on news of our AFG grant from FEMA,” S3 said. He added the department also applied for a radio/armor grant and had not received word on that application.
S3 said the department acquired a used Can-Am defender — a replacement for an older John Deere Gator — at roughly one-third the cost of a new vehicle, and plans to outfit it with a pump and skid unit and later upgrade it for rescue capabilities. He also said five members, including the chief, will participate Friday in an aircraft crash exercise at Rochester International Airport that will involve agencies from the FBI to the NTSB.
S3 told council staff are beginning the process to replace a rescue truck; the manufacturer lead time cited in the meeting was 36 to 39 months, making early planning necessary.
The chief also noted the department received redistributed state funding for training that it submitted invoices to claim and that the open-house for Fire Prevention Week will be Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The council did not vote on any fire-department items at this meeting; S3’s report was presented for information.
