After reports of poaching, commissioners set public hearing to consider closing end of County Road 2906

The Anderson County Commissioners Court voted to set a public hearing to consider closing the final 0.2 mile of Anderson County Road 2906 after a commissioner reported multiple poaching incidents in the area.

Commissioner Mills presented the proposal, saying Texas Parks and Wildlife had ‘‘had a bunch of reports of poaching, and people going down there just, hunting and doing their own thing without getting any rights.’’ Mills said the agency and a local landowner (Cliff Johnson) proposed installing a locked gate and giving keys or the combination to Texas Parks and Wildlife staff and associated landowners to restrict access beyond the gate.

Mills noted that the area is a dead-end dirt road with a pipeline easement nearby and that traffic increases during deer season. He also identified long-time residents near the road — including Betty Thomas and Miss Finch — and said the county’s maintenance obligations decrease where the road is effectively only one-sixteenth of a mile of maintained county roadway.

The court first moved to close the segment, then amended the motion to instead set and advertise a public hearing on the closure. County staff were directed to publish the required legal notice in the newspaper and to schedule a public hearing at the next commissioners court meeting. Commissioner Hill moved to post the hearing; Commissioner Chapin seconded and the motion passed by voice vote.

No final closure was enacted at the Oct. 21 meeting; the action authorized the public-notice process and a hearing at which residents and stakeholders may provide input.
