Anderson County court backs Palestine EDC strategic plan

Christophe Trahan, director of the Palestine Economic Development Corporation, asked the Anderson County Commissioners Court to adopt a resolution recognizing the EDC’s updated strategic plan and the board’s goals for regional economic development. Trahan told the court the EDC last updated its plan in May 2021 and that the new strategy focuses on four categories: business retention and expansion, new and small business development, targeted marketing and attraction, and incentives and infrastructure.

"What we're here today asking for is just a resolution of support from the court in recognizing these goals," Trahan said while summarizing proposed actions such as a business retention visitation program, a workforce advisory council, feasibility studies for a revolving loan fund and efforts to support rail-served industrial park development. He also described plans to partner with stakeholders on targeted marketing around opportunities tied to the NASA Columbia facility and to expand broadband and workforce training initiatives.

Judge opened the floor for a motion to approve a resolution of support; Commissioner Mims moved and Commissioner Hill seconded. The court voted in favor and the resolution was ordered approved.

The resolution is intended to be a county-level endorsement so the EDC can continue regional outreach to city councils and school boards and pursue grant and partnership opportunities. The presentation noted EDC staff will continue implementation steps described in the packet and timeline the board approved.
