Barron County votes 27-1 to formally endorse Mosaic Technologies for state broadband grant

The Barron County Board of Supervisors on July 22 approved a resolution formally endorsing Mosaic Technologies for the Wisconsin Public Service Commission Broadband Equity Access program, a move supporters said can add points to Mosaic’s grant application.

Supervisor Heller moved the resolution and Supervisor Hansen seconded. Supporters noted the state application awards additional points to applicants with formal local endorsements. John, speaking on the executive committee’s review, said the difference was semantic but important for scoring: "When you look up to what the word endorsement means, it means to lend your support to," he said, explaining that without the formal endorsement Mosaic would receive fewer points from the PSC review panel.

Supervisor Vaughn objected that the county should not formally endorse a private company, asking, "So last month, I think we said that, the county didn't want to endorse a private company. So I'm wondering what has changed because it seems to be what's happening here." The board’s executive committee recommended the endorsement as a competitive necessity; the motion passed 27-1 with Vaughn casting the lone no vote.

Supporters emphasized that endorsing Mosaic does not preclude other providers from participating in broadband efforts. The board recorded the vote as 27 yes, 1 no, and staff will send the formal letter of endorsement to support Mosaic’s application.
