The Morris City Council voted to approve a one-year airport farmland lease with MTM Farms LLC for 2025, revising the contract to reflect about 15 acres near the runway and changing the rent terms in the contract text.
City manager Becca described the lease as a short-term, one-year renewal while staff considers a broader request next year to put more airport land out for competitive bid. “So, I did, look at just doing, another 1 year lease with MTM Farms, going up to, a hundred and 50,” Becca said when summarizing the contract edits presented to council.
Council members asked about the current rate and crop restrictions. Staff said parts of the parcel are not currently rented and that the contract includes a safety-related restriction: a 250-foot no-crop zone measured from the runway centerline, intended to prevent tall crops near aircraft operations. Council discussion noted that tall crops, bales or equipment should not remain in restricted zones and that daily removal would be required where necessary for safety.
A councilmember moved the resolution; after a roll-call vote the motion carried with affirmative responses recorded during roll call. The lease is for one year; staff said next year they plan to consider offering additional airport land for bid and to review bylaws later in the month.
