Oconomowoc OKs $28,197 amendment for police vehicle replacements amid supply constraints

The Oconomowoc Common Council approved a Dec. 3 budget amendment of $28,197.24 to the Police Department’s squad-replacement capital account to cover higher-than-expected costs for replacing pursuit vehicles.
Chief Pfister told the council the department initially budgeted $125,000 for squad replacements but an inability to source two-wheel-drive pursuit-rated vehicles this year meant available vehicles were four-wheel-drive and cost more. “We initially had $125,000 set aside for the squad replacement… The total amount that we went over… is $28,197.24,” Pfister said.
Council members asked about replacement cycles, resale and whether controlled storage (garage) has improved vehicle longevity. Pfister said the fleet rotation had been pushed from every two years to every three years, and vehicles sometimes are reassigned within city departments before auction; the city expects to recoup some resale value at auction. He also said the department already placed next year’s order.
Because the amendment was for capital spending, the mayor noted a supermajority vote was required; the roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval. No changes to the department’s policy or replacement schedule were adopted at the meeting beyond what Chief Pfister described.
The amendment covers vehicle price differentials, equipment changeover and squad cameras; the council did not specify additional funding sources beyond the capital-reserve account identified in the packet.
