Board tables proposed glass enclosure at 507 West Main, asks for clearer renderings

The Historic Review Board voted to table an application from the owner of 507 West Main seeking to enclose a small restaurant patio with a predominantly glass partition. Applicant John Tomlin described the need for more usable indoor seating and said the proposed transparent partition would preserve visual access to adjacent properties. Several board members disagreed.

Shelby, the city preservation planner, briefed the board on the site's low rating and explained staff's reliance on design guidelines including section 3.2.0.10. Board member Sharon Joseph and others said the proposed contemporary glass and metal frame would, when viewed from the west, obscure a neighboring high-rated resource and disrupt the historic Main Street context. A member said the current packet "doesn't give us adequate information to make a valid decision" and repeatedly asked for a map-view rendering showing the existing stone planter, fireplace and curb distances.

After extended discussion about pulling the glass partition back, altering materials and providing clearer elevations and setbacks, a motion to table the application passed. The board asked the applicant to submit more accurate renderings (hand-drawn or digital) showing setbacks, post locations and sight lines in time for the March deadline. The board noted that tabling the application is procedural; no final determination on the merits was made.
