Oshkosh council approves land purchase for 5.5-acre workforce housing project

The Oshkosh Common Council voted Dec. 10 to approve acquisition of a 5.5-acre parcel at 3483 Jackson Street to enable workforce housing development (Resolution 24-682). Planning Commission recommended approval. Councilmembers said the purchase will enable construction of single-family homes targeted to households in the workforce-income band and noted the city has built few new single-family units in recent years.
During discussion council members emphasized the difference between "workforce housing" (targeted to households at roughly the middle of the income spectrum) and "affordable housing," and called for additional outreach to nearby residents to address questions and correct misinformation. Councilmember Nichols and others said staff will continue design work and outreach; council carried the resolution 7-0.
Council members described the acquisition as a means to add housing options in a land-locked city and to provide standard designs intended to speed construction when partners are identified.
