Sheriff reports 21 inmates systemwide, staffing and testing challenges for dispatch hires

Callahan County's sheriff told the Commissioners Court on Feb. 10 that the county was currently housing two male and three female inmates locally and was holding additional inmates in neighboring counties for a systemwide total of 21.
The sheriff presented overtime figures for Jan. 16–29 and said two dispatch hires were nearly complete while a third candidate remained pending final testing. He described hiring hurdles: psychological examinations and physicals were taking longer and costing more than in the past. "It's like $300 a pop to have somebody tested," the sheriff said, noting availability and cost issues for psychological exams and delays on physical-clearance steps for hires.
Commissioners had no further questions, and Commissioner Farr moved to accept the sheriff's report. Commissioner McGowan seconded; the court approved the report by voice vote.
The sheriff's remarks flagged hiring and testing bottlenecks in public safety staffing; county administrators will continue to process new hires and report updates to the court.
