At the Sept. 3 meeting, the Smithfield Town Council approved a series of consent and contract items by voice vote.
Licenses and events: The council approved multiple one-day special-event licenses for 7 Cedars Farm (20 John Murray Road) and a one-day beer/wine license for a private party on Sept. 29, 2024 (rain date Oct. 6, 2024), contingent on compliance with state regulations, local ordinances and proof of insurance.
Equipment and contracts: Council authorized purchase of gas detection meters for the Fire Department from Airgas USA LLC for $16,775.75 (Rhode Island master price agreement), a five-year pavement-management update from Beta Group not to exceed $32,850, and a sole-source utility billing software purchase from Continental Utility Solutions, Inc. (CUSI) for $28,600 (Smithfield share ~ $9,500 based on about 1,600 water meters). The council also approved a five-year Konica Minolta lease for multifunction printers under Master Price Agreement #337.
Utilities and abatements: The council approved a petition from Rhode Island Energy to install nine new poles on Tarkland Road and approved tax abatements totaling $800.02.
Motions on these items were moved, seconded and approved by voice votes. Where residents raised questions (insurance for event license; timing of library audit deliverables) staff provided clarifications but no items were postponed or amended.
