The Canal Winchester Local board on Monday authorized staff to advertise for bids on up to six school buses, approved the district’s bus-stop map for the 2024–25 year and adopted several emergency personnel- and leave-related policy updates, all by 5–0 roll-call votes.
The board passed a resolution authorizing Meta Solutions to solicit bids for buses. A board member explained the advertisement is a procedural step that would allow the district to gather purchase options if they become necessary; it does not obligate the district to make purchases. “The resolution does not authorize us to purchase any buses,” the speaker said, adding the district had recently lost several older vehicles and wanted capacity to secure replacements if needed.
Board members also approved the routine annual resolution establishing bus-stop locations and authorized the superintendent to make operational amendments during the school year as new students enroll. The board approved additional payments in lieu of transportation for eligible applicants, another standard annual action.
In the policy section the board voted to adopt several emergency policy revisions tied to recently negotiated changes. The superintendent outlined the updates: a wellness policy review (required every three years) will be documented as complete; severance pay calculations will be updated; sick-leave language was changed so that teaching staff may use up to four of the 15 sick days required by Ohio Revised Code as personal leave; and the district raised the maximum sick-day accumulation from 250 to 300. The revision to unrestricted personal leave reduces paid personal days for some employees and removes the ability to cash out unused personal days; instead, unused personal days will roll into sick leave where applicable.
All votes on the advertised-bids resolution, bus-stop resolution, payment in lieu and the emergency policy adoptions were recorded as 5 yes, 0 no.
Next steps: advertising for bids will proceed through the vendor named in the resolution; any actual purchases would return to the board for approval if required.
