The North Kingstown Town Council ratified a three-year collective bargaining agreement with Laborers Local 10-33 on Aug. 5, approving wage increases, health-care consolidation and other language changes described by the town manager.
Town Manager Ralph (first referenced in the meeting as 'Ralph') summarized the agreement’s financial and nonfinancial terms: an effective date of July 1 and phased wage changes that the manager summarized as a $0.50-per-hour increase in year one followed by a 3% raise (year 1), a $0.75-per-hour increase followed by a 3.5% raise (year 2) and a 4% wage increase in year 3. The manager said the town consolidated health-plan options for this unit, producing estimated savings of about $725 per year to the town and reestablished union prescription coverage; some language adjustments affecting holidays and management rights were also included.
The contract covers multiple municipal departments, including public works, water, the senior center, library, administrative clerks in police and fire departments, dispatch and golf course staff. Council members and the manager praised the negotiating teams’ work; the council moved to approve the ratification and recorded 'ayes' in the transcript.
What happens next: Town staff will finalize signatures and implement the new pay scales and benefits changes to make compensation effective as agreed in the contract.
