North Kingstown residents press council and school committee to prioritize climate action and green school construction

Residents used the meeting’s public-comment period to press the town council and school committee to put the comprehensive plan’s climate and clean-energy goals into action.

Dave Caldwell opened the public comments noting excavation work at Yorktown Park after recurring flooding and advocated for building new projects all-electric or with ground-source heat pumps. "We should be building our new buildings, all electric or ground source heat pumps," he said, urging thoughtful, economically and environmentally sustainable planning.

Others linked school construction to climate policy. Peg Parker said she was "thrilled to see that geothermal and solar was included in the bond issue" for the new middle school and asked that those systems be guaranteed in contract language from the start. Donna Lico urged the school committee to aim for a "net 0 building" and to involve students in the project as a learning opportunity.

Speakers highlighted wider community action: Mary Warbeck and Rick Sellers recommended the town partner with state and quasi-state entities to expand solar capacity, including using surface parking lots in the Quonset Business Park as potential sites. Several members of the volunteer group Climate Conversations requested a briefing from the town on progress implementing the 2019 comprehensive plan and offered to assist with outreach and workshops.

Council and school officials acknowledged the concerns and noted related items on the agenda, including school construction and future budget deliberations. No formal policy decisions were adopted during the meeting; the speakers asked the councils to prioritize resilience, contract protections for renewable systems in school bonds, and public engagement.
