Council appoints new member; vice-president seat remains vacant after tie

On Aug. 13 the Portsmouth Town Council appointed a new council member by a 3–2 vote after considering several nominations from a field of 10 applicants. The council followed its established procedure of taking nominations and then voting; the selected candidate may be sworn in after the meeting.
Council members also nominated two candidates for vice president (Doctor Ryan and Keith Hamilton) but the council produced a tie in the initial voice tallies and decided not to fill the role for the short remainder of the term. Several committee and board appointments were approved by unanimous votes, including reappointments to planning and advisory bodies.
The council approved a range of housekeeping items — minutes, tax vouchers, reappointments, and event permits — and endorsed a number of administrative contracts and capital purchases later in the meeting.
