The Portsmouth Town Council on its regular meeting night presented the 2024 Portsmouth Award to the 4 Hearts Foundation and to James Knott for sustained community service.
President opened the presentations, saying the award recognizes individuals, businesses or civic groups that demonstrate professional leadership and service to the town. The council read citations commending the 4 Hearts Foundation for spearheading fundraising, planning and construction of an accessible playground off Turnpike Avenue and noting the facility’s June grand reopening.
A representative of the 4 Hearts Foundation thanked the council and said the playground ‘‘has been a tremendous success’’ with frequent use by families. The foundation noted its aim to organize future community projects to benefit the island.
The council also presented the Portsmouth Community Service Award to James Knott, who was recognized for more than 46 years of local service as a military veteran, youth-soccer organizer and longtime member (including six years as chair) of the Portsmouth Zoning Board of Review. Knott gave brief remarks thanking his family and the community and saying he was raised to ‘‘give back to the community that gave to you.’’
No council action was required beyond the presentations. The meeting then moved on to routine business.
