Summary
After hearing police complaints about noise and parking, the council voted 3–2 on Nov. 18 to delay the public hearing and decision on the Boone Street Market liquor license renewal until Dec. 2; the market’s license remains in effect pending council action.
The Narragansett Town Council on Nov. 18 voted 3–2 to defer the public hearing and decision on the renewal of the Boone Street Market’s alcoholic beverage license until the incoming council convenes on Dec. 2.
Town Manager Tierney reported that his office had received complaints about noise and parking associated with The Market at Gansett Rail LLC doing business as Boone Street Market and that the Police Department had been monitoring the situation. After discussion, one councilor moved to continue the Boone Street Market matter to the Dec. 2 meeting; that motion passed 3–2.
Council members who opposed the continuance said the sitting council members had an obligation to hear both sides that night. Supporters of the continuance said deference to the incoming council was appropriate given the issue’s controversy and newly provided police information. Town staff confirmed that, while the hearing is deferred, the license remains in effect until the council takes action.
What’s next: The Boone Street Market matter will be the subject of a public hearing on Dec. 2 before the incoming council; the police department may provide additional information prior to that meeting.
