Council continues Pate property discussion after residents raise traffic, bridge and drainage concerns

Several residents, including property owner Constantine Tabla and neighbors from the Washington Street area, asked for clearer plans and raised concerns that on-site brook flows and bridge capacity could make large-sports facilities unsafe. Multiple speakers urged a smaller development footprint, raised contamination concerns about previously dumped soil near the bridge, and questioned whether outside groups would be permitted to rent a future field. Speakers noted the bridge is state-owned and urged the mayor and state officials to expedite a review and possible widening.
Council members said they bought properties to preserve open space and emphasized they were not rushing a decision; the mayor and council expressed interest in securing state involvement on the bridge and in limiting the development footprint. The council voted to continue Pate to a Sept. 25 special meeting along with Colletti Farm to allow additional review and resident input.
No final design or budget was approved; council members encouraged staff to investigate grant opportunities and to work with state officials on the bridge and drainage issues before any final commitments.
