East Greenwich approves IT, public safety and track projects totaling roughly $1.1 million in phase funding

The East Greenwich Town Council on Nov. 25 approved three capital project awards: a town virtual‑server (Nutanix) upgrade, a phase‑1 public safety communications package, and resurfacing of the high‑school track.
IT upgrade (Nutanix): Tim Wheeler, director of information technology, said the town’s virtual server environment had reached end of life and required replacement to maintain cybersecurity and backup capability. The council voted to award the Nutanix system purchase to E Plus Technology (a Nutanix reseller) and to fund it through existing capital improvement funds. The agenda listed a purchase amount of $148,524.19; a motion later recorded the award amount as $148,005.24 (the council approved the bid by roll call). The purchase will replace hardware that currently hosts ~30 virtual servers and integrate with the town’s off‑site Datto cloud backups.
Public safety communications (phase 1): The council approved a phase‑1 award to CyberCom (Warwick) and Motorola Solutions (Chicago) for a public safety radio and dispatch modernization package. Town staff described a multi‑phase effort to replace aging radio infrastructure, procure new portable and mobile radios for police, fire, DPW and EMA, and modernize two dispatch centers with redundancy. Phase 1 equipment and radios were presented at approximately $892,499.20; the project will be funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, town bonding and a public safety capital reserve. Council approved the phase‑1 award and accepted staff’s multi‑phase funding approach.
Track resurfacing (Carcheri Field): The council voted to award a bid to Cape & Island Tennis and Track (Pocasset, MA) to resurface the East Greenwich High School six‑lane track; the contract was authorized not to exceed $129,700 and will be paid from ARPA fund balance. Town and school staff said the resurfacing, targeted for summer to avoid sports conflicts, will extend the track’s useful life and bring stripe markings in line with interscholastic standards.
Funding and next steps: Councilors said they are pursuing grant and appropriations opportunities to complete later phases of the communications upgrade. Staff will manage contracting and scheduling and return to council with updates as phases progress.
